You may be asking yourself “how do world cup biathletes shoot so fast, yet so accurately?” Well the answer is they break up the shooting process into four distinct phases and through specific focus in training, they prioritize and grow each piece of the shooting process individually, before piecing it all back together to create the impressive performances we love about the sport.
The Four Phases of Biathlon Shooting:
Phase 1: Rifle on the back to down into position
Phase 2: Fine aiming
Phase 3: The shooting sequence
Phase 4: Last shot to off the mat
Phases 1 and 4 are all about speed. By loading their rifles and handling their rifles quickly in these phases, athletes like Simon Eder can shoot in under 20 seconds.
Phases 2 and 3 are all about precision. These are the phases where athletes like Vanessa Voigt can focus on hitting the target and produce the best hit percentages on the circuit.
