The debut — and only — album by pianist Rubin Mitchell, whose remarkable talent once made him an East Coast legend. Born in the Bahamas and raised in Florida, he began playing at five after hearing boogie-woogie pioneer Pete Johnson. His left-hand drive and crystalline phrasing shaped a unique sound that Capitol once called “as prodigious as the mitts are mighty.”
Recorded in 1967, Presenting Rubin Mitchell blends boogie energy, melodic finesse, and a rare sense of swing elegance. It’s an album that captures both the precision of a concert pianist and the rhythm of a jazz club late at night.
Restored from the original Capitol stereo pressing — now presented in warm analog clarity by Velvet Syncopation Jazz Hub.

Mitchell’s playing bridges swing and modern jazz — rich, rhythmic, yet refined. His style combines the percussive attack of boogie-woogie with the grace of chamber phrasing.
Capitol’s liner notes described him as a “two-fisted eighty-eighter” — a pianist whose sound came alive through sheer kinetic energy. Though he released only this one record, it remains a rare gem of mid-60s jazz.
Digitized, restored, and remastered from original vinyl.
Part of the series “Lost Legends of Jazz Piano.”
