A Redmi 20000mAh power bank bought in 2021 swelled up so much that it broke the case! In this video, I take it apart to see what’s inside and what might have caused this issue.
A lithium-ion battery can swell due to various reasons, all linked to abnormal chemical reactions inside the cells.
🔬 The Process Leading to Swelling:
1. Electrolyte Breakdown – Over time, the liquid electrolyte inside the battery can degrade, releasing gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen (H₂). These gases get trapped inside the cell, causing it to expand.
2. Overcharging or Overheating – If the battery is charged beyond its limit or exposed to high temperatures, unwanted chemical reactions occur, generating gases and leading to swelling.
3. Manufacturing Defects – Some batteries have impurities or design flaws that can trigger abnormal reactions, even if the battery is used properly.
4. Battery Aging – With repeated charge and discharge cycles, the internal components degrade, increasing the risk of swelling.
5. Internal Short Circuit – If the separator between the anode and cathode gets damaged, a short circuit can occur, generating heat and gas buildup.
Swollen lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous, so if you ever notice your power bank expanding, it’s best to stop using it immediately.
