Since we have been to the Universal Studio Japan previously, the sole purpose of this trip was to visit the Super Nintendo World, which recently opened on March 18, 2021. We visited USJ on a Thursday in early December. It was packed with high school students on school excursion as well as domestic and international tourists.
Due to Super Nintendo World’s immense popularity, a timed entry ticket is currently required to enter the area. The entry ticket specifies the time slot in which guests could enter the area. Timed entry tickets can be obtained via USJ’s official app. For foreign visitors with limited time, advance booking area timed entry ticket and express pass are also on sale.
Once inside, we immediately launched the USJ app to obtain a timed entry ticket for the Super Nintendo World. We were given with a time slot for 11:40 ~ 12:40. After some wandering, we entered the Super Nintendo World at 11:40. Although the area was constantly filled with visitors, there was sufficient room to move around. Once inside the Super Nintendo World, we immediately headed to Kinopio’s Café. As expected, an entry ticket is also required to dine inside. The earliest time given to us was 14:45. With almost three hours to kill, we headed for the Yoshi’s Adventure attraction, which had a 90-min wait time. For this ride, visitors can hop on to Yoshi to “treasure hunt” and get an overall view of the entire area. The ride lasts approximately 5 minutes.
By the time we got out of Yoshi’s Adventure it was around 13:50. There was still more than an hour left before we could enter Kinopio’s Café; the wait time for Koopa’s Challenge was around 125 minutes; the line for Yoshi’s Snack Island was also ridiculously long (at least 40 minutes); so we made a tough decision to grab another entry ticket for the café for 15:45 and headed for Koopa’s Challenge.
Koopa’s Challenge is a Mario Kart theme park ride that lasts for approximately 5 minutes. It is based on the iconic Mario Kart series of games where players can collect coins and throw various objects at the opponents. The courses are brought to life through augmented reality, projection mapping and screen projection combined with a physical set. It was a fun ride but players may also feel slightly dizzy. The decorations inside Bowser’s Castle were phenomenal, which helped ease the long wait time.
By the time we finished Koopa’s Challenge it was almost time to enter Kinopio’s Café. And we were starving. Kinopio’s Café is surprisingly spacious (as the outside resembles a small mushroom). There were actually many empty seats inside the café when we visited; but operation seemed to be behind in terms of order and food delivery. Nonetheless, the interior of the cafe is beautifully crafted and many fun gourmet dishes are offered. We spent ¥8,500 for two for a very late lunch.
After filling our bellies, we wandered around the area and gift shops, which offer vast lineup of souvenirs and wearable merchandise only available at the Universal Studio Japan. After spending more than five hours at the Super Nintendo World, we left the area at 17:30 and called it a day.
