The Makaibari Tea Estate and the Makaibari Tea Factory are nestled on the rolling hills of Kurseong in the Darjeeling district. The tea factory was established in 1859 and is the oldest tea garden in Darjeeling, probably one of the oldest tea gardens in the world. Makaibari Tea Estate is also the producer of Silver Tips Imperial tea, the world's most expensive tea. We plucked Silver Tips tea leaves under the moonlight with the hue of hundreds of flaring fire torches as the blue hour sets in over an enormous carpet of green of the Paila Kheti - tea shrubs dating back nearly 165 years. We also visited the phenomenal Chungey tea garden of the Makaibari estate to pluck succulent green leaves for the second flush summer solstice Muscatel and witnessed a unique tea ritual. We went through a complete tea-producing lifecycle from plucking leaves to processing and packaging during the Makaibari Tea Factory tour.

We rested at the Makaibari bungalow, managed by the Taj Group, during our journey and had lavish food throughout the day.
