STORYLINE:
On January 14th 2011 Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali resigned after 23 tears in power and fled to Saudi Arabia. This was a direct result of protests in the country which began in December 2011 when a street vendor, Mohammed Bouazizi set fire to himself in protest to harassment by a municipal officer. His act seemed to incite riots throughout Tunisia in protest of political and social issues in the country. The demonstrators protested about high unemployment, inflation, the lack of freedom of speech and political corruption. Within 28 days of Bouazizi's actions President Ben Ali had fled the country.
On Ben Ali's departure a state of emergency was declared and a caretaker coalition government was created.
