Construction began around 1899, connecting Saint-Gervais to Argentière by 1901, Martigny to Le Châtelard by 1906, and culminating in a cross-border link via a 1.8 km tunnel under Col des Montets by 1907/1908. From its inception, the railway was electrified, powered by local hydroelectricity.
