This baby is about 5 weeks old and has been under treatment for pox for the past 10 days. He has begun to drink water from a shallow bowl and although he pecks at grains, does not, as yet, attempt to eat them.
Baby pigeons do not gape like many other baby birds. In nature, they would put their beaks into the parents’ mouth and ingest the formula in a pumping action.
Ensure soft and moist food is given during the hand-feeding stage – the formula at this stage will be like a thick, coarse paste. Give adequate gaps between morsels of food and offer some water after the meal.
Water can be offered with a syringe and about 0.2-0.3 ml of water can be given at a time. Keep the beak horizontal while giving water so any excess can fall out rather than going into the wind pipe.
