STORYLINE:
People were assisting the rescue of other locals in the Turkish town of Pazarcik on Monday after a powerful, 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked wide swaths of Turkey and neighboring Syria.
The death toll from the earthquake is still rising with more than 2,800 people dead and thousands injured as it toppled hundreds of buildings and trapped residents under mounds of rubble or pancaked floors.
“My two grandchildren, my daughter-in-law, are all inside, they haven’t come out,” said Hasan Birbalta as he anxiously waited by a collapsed building.
Throughout the day, major aftershocks rattled the region, including one jolt that was nearly as strong as the initial quake.
The US Geological Survey measured Monday’s quake, that was centered on Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, at 7.8, with a depth of 18 kilometers. Hours later, a 7.5 magnitude temblor struck more than 100 km (60m) away.
Local resident Gulay Ilkutli said she there hasn't been sufficient assistance and was desperately worried about her mother and bother who were trapped under the wreckage.
“They haven’t even sent a crew. We’ve been waiting since this morning,” she said.
Thousands of search-and-rescue personnel, firefighters and medics were working across ten Turkish provinces, along with some 3,500 soldiers.
Residents lifted rubble and unearthed people were heard screaming from beneath the debris.
Turkish military ambulance planes were transporting the injured to Istanbul and Ankara hospitals, the defense ministry said.
