orbiting a planet. When it collided with Jupiter in
1994, it became the first comet to ever be
observed crashing into a planet's surface.

After being pulled into the orbit of the planet
Jupiter, Comet Shoemaker Levy 9 broke apart in
1992 and collided with the gas giant in 1994.
This was the first time that humans were ever
able to observe an extraterrestrial collision
event.

When Shoemaker Levy crashed into the surface
of Jupiter, the collision had visible effects.
"Scars" could be seen on the planet for many
months following the impact, especially in the
Great Red Spot, where much of the debris
landed.
