Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga today rescheduled the trial of former Minister Diana Gamage, who faces seven charges including providing false information to the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to obtain a passport, and remaining in Sri Lanka without a valid visa in violation of the Immigration and Emigration Act.
The trial, initially set to commence on July 31, has now been postponed to August 21.
Although the court had earlier fixed July 31 for the commencement of evidence in the case filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), President's Counsel Shanaka Ranasinghe, who appears in the case, is scheduled to appear in a matter before the Supreme Court on that date. Consequently, Counsel Nishith Abeysuriya, appearing on behalf of Diana Gamage, filed a motion requesting an alternative date.
Upon considering the motion, the Magistrate allowed the request and rescheduled the proceedings.
The Counsel appearing for the Attorney General's Department informed the court that the case has already been postponed on three prior occasions and urged that a short date be fixed for the commencement of evidence.
