STORYLINE:
The US government''s chief defence and diplomatic officials were encouraged by the determination of Iraq''s newly selected leader, but the itinerary on their second day of an unannounced visit underscored the difficulties ahead for US forces and the emerging Iraqi government.
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld began his day on Thursday with a briefing on the latest programmes and technologies to counter
increasingly sophisticated roadside bombs that are a prime killer of US forces in Iraq.
Rumsfeld and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice later heard from US diplomats advising Iraq''s troubled Interior Ministry, which oversees security and police forces that are hobbled by corruption and riven by sectarian loyalties.
The double-barrelled show of support from Rumsfeld and Rice for Iraq''s first permanent democratic government was meant to resonate in Iraq and among Americans.
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, and vice presidents Tariq al-Hashimi and Adil Abdul-Mahdi met with Rice and Rumsfeld on Wednesday.
At a session with Rumsfeld on Thursday, Iraq''s national security adviser, Muwaffak Rubaie, thanked Americans for helping Iraq and spoke optimistically of substantial US troop reductions this year and next.
He did not mention specific figures.
Rice told reporters that Iraq''s leaders recognised the challenges before them.
But another Baghdad resident was more sceptical.
