This hymn’s words were written by Horatio Spafford who had profound grief after losing his son to Scarlett fever recently and then sending his wife and four daughters ahead on to Europe. His daughters drown when the ship sunk and his wife alone survived. He wrote the words while sailing to Europe to join his grieving wife. Music composer Ohilip Bliss was moved by the poem and composed the melody, naming it “Ville du Havre” after the sunken ship.
The hymn’s verses speak to finding rest and assurance in Christ’s presence, even when facing immense loss.
