I was getting ready to swap out the rear end thinking that was the source of my very bad noises when I finally spotted the real problem. The sidewall of the needle bearing cup was shattered, and very little stood in the way of total failure. The swap took less than 2 hours and was pretty easy once I figured out what I was doing.
On a side note, this was an original u-joint with almost 150,000 miles on it. the remaining 4 will get replaced soon, when my schedule frees up a bit.
