Harvard's Wyss Institute built a robotic arm inspired by octopus tentacles that's deceptively powerful—despite being made from soft silicone, it lifts 260 times its own weight.
The design copies two key octopus features: tapered arms and suction grippers. With just two controls for bending and suction, it handles any object without adjustments.
That's the breakthrough. The same gripper delicately holds an egg, then grabs a heavy exercise ball. No tool changes, no reprogramming.
Unlike rigid grippers built for specific shapes, this soft arm wraps around anything: fragile objects, irregular items, even slippery things underwater.
Researchers successfully tested it on eggs, coffee mugs, and live crabs.
