Welcome to Walking The Wyrd!
In this adventure, I explore the beautiful gothic ruins of Titchfield Abbey in Hampshire.
Titchfield Abbey started life in the 13th century as a humble monastic building serving a group of Premonstratensian canons - an order founded in Premontre, France. They were known as the 'white canons' due to the white habits they wore. They lived a communal life following the rule of St Augustine but they also served the wider community as parish priests.
In 1537, the abbey became a victim of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Henry VIII decided to grant the abbey and it's lands to his loyal yet ruthless servant, Thomas Wriothesley. Thomas played a key role in the dissolution and Henry rewarded him handsomely gifting him many monastic buildings and land. Thomas set about transforming Titchfield Abbey into something very grand and lavish and renamed the building, Place House.
Join me for a brief history and explore of this romantic ruin!
