Chess history is replete with examples of blatant injustice, with the strongest players of their time failing to become world champions. There's another dysfunction in the world championship process: the crown has been awarded to players who weren't the best in the world. We consider players like Keres and Korchnoi to be equal to world champions, but what about titled champions whose legitimacy is questionable? What is their place in chess history? Can they truly stand alongside Alekhine, Fischer, Kasparov, or Carlsen? Or is the gulf between, say, Kasparov and Ding so great that they can hardly be considered in the same league?
