On 15 April 2016, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), conducted investitures at Government House, Canberra, for nearly 100 recipients of Australian honours and awards announced in the Australia Day 2016 honours list.
The honours and awards invested included appointments and awards in the Order of Australia, Australian Bravery Decorations, meritorious awards including the Public Service Medal, the Australian Police Medal, the Australian Fire Service Medal and the Emergency Services Medal, and military awards including Distinguished and Conspicuous Service Decorations.
During the ceremony the recipient is introduced by the Governor-General’s Official Secretary, with a short summary of their service or achievement. The Governor-General then “invests” the person with the relevant “insignia” – presenting them with the medal or other device which represents their honour or award. Some insignia are hung around the neck by a ribbon, while most are pinned to the chest.
The ceremonies are conducted in the Drawing Room of the Governor-General’s official residence in Canberra. Award recipients from the Australian Capital Territory, and from nearby regions of New South Wales, are invited to investitures in Canberra. In addition, all persons appointed as a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), the highest level in the Order, are invited to Canberra to be invested personally by the Governor-General, who is the Chancellor of the Order. Recipients from other parts of Australia are invited to investitures by the Governor or Administrator in their state or territory capital city.
