It was the first time that warships defending themselves & sailing in open water had been sunk solely by an air attack.
It would change naval warfare forever.
In response to growing threats from Japan, the British sent HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse to Singapore.
They formed the core of Force Z, commanded by Admiral Tom Phillips.
Force Z comprised:
HMS Prince of Wales (Captain John Leach)
HMS Repulse (Captain William Tennant)
HMS Express
HMS Electra
HMAS Vampire
On the morning of the 10th December 1941, both ships were sunk by torpedoes launched from Japanese bombers.
Over 800 sailors Royal Navy sailors lost their lives.
Coming on the back of Pearl Harbour (Pearl Harbor), it was a major turning point in World War 2.
Without any serious naval interference from the Royal Navy or the US Navy, the Japanese were able to sweep through south east Asia.
Within two months they had forced the British into a humiliating surrender at Singapore.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.
