In this video, the NJ Transit Aqua Train cleans the rails on the North Jersey Coast Line, an annual maintenance routine to remove leaf residue. The train uses two tank cars of water and a specially designed spray car that can pressure-wash the rails at 20,000 PSI and 17 gallons per minute. This night in particular was quite interesting, as they sprayed the entire line from Bay Head to Graw Interlocking, with the train being based out of Red Bank. The locomotive assigned to the Aqua Train was NJT GP40PH-2 4112. Formerly Central Railroad of New Jersey GP40P 3678, the 4112 is one of a handful of former CNJ units that haven’t been overhauled into non-revenue units. Even though the 4112 wasn’t overhauled, it was relegated to non-revenue service in 2014 after the head-end power (HEP) generator broke down. With all that set, please enjoy the video!
