Get ready for the story of a lifetime a 738-mile road trip, a $50 plane ticket, and the total transformation of a 1961 Chevy Apache Step Side. In May 2020, I found this beauty on Facebook Marketplace down in Beaumont, Texas. With only 3 days' notice, I packed my bag, flew south, and drove it all the way back to St. Louis, Missouri. That’s where the real adventure began.
A Frame-Off, Heart-and-Soul Rebuild
Over four years, we tore the Apache down to the frame sandblasted, primed, painted, and restored every nut and bolt. Gone is the original 235 straight 6. In its place? A beastly 5.3L LS motor, paired with a 4L60 transmission and a rear end from a ’69 C10 with 3.73 gears. Blood, sweat, and wrench time turned this tired truck into a modern classic ready to cruise again.
