When the armistice was signed in June 1940, thousands of these aircraft were left sitting on airfields. Some were destroyed by their crews. Some were captured by the Luftwaffe and used for training. But many others escaped.
Pilots stole D.520s and flew them to North Africa.[1] Others flew to England to join the Free French. The tragedy of French aviation in World War II is not a lack of talent or engineering genius. The LeO 451, the D.520, and the Bloch 174 proved that France could build world-class machines. The failure was one of time, politics, and production.
