Section C1
This section is anchored harmonically around A flat. The third above alternating between C and C flat gives the music a slightly dizzying, hypnotic character. The section uses two melodies and is a contrast to the previous section. The flow of the music is interrupted by the sudden changes in time signature throughout. The cello part features harmonics which give an ethereal, otherworldy quality to the sound.

The melody in this section is played twice. In the repetition, the music is played an octave lower so many notes lie below the violin’s register. As a result, the notes it can play are sometimes isolated, as in bars 134–136, which adds a choppy edge to the piece's texture.
