During the Great Depression, the Bowers Pottery Company in Mannington, West Virginia, was solidly on its way to a net worth of tens of millions of dollars. The factory with 20 enormous kilns made sinks and toilets, and was said have been the world's largest "sanitary pottery". It's owner, George W. Bowers lived right in Mannington in a sprawling home that would grow to total 23 rooms. The Bowers family filled those rooms with the best things money could buy. George and his family had lots of interests; these included first edition books, objects of beauty, maps, rare coins, jewelry, high quality furnishing including 96 Oriental Rugs ... seemly never throwing anything away, in a meticulously kept home. The collection seemed frozen in the 1940s, since the collecting began in the 1910s and mostly stopped after Mr. Bowers died in the 1940s. When Francis Bowers, the last person in the family, passed away in 2000, it was her wish for the whole collection to be auctioned away, a good part of the proceeds funding a major endowment that has and will continue to fund worthy local projects. 2001
