Val Dal is one of my favourite dals and this recipe is from my favourite aunt who raised me and took care of me as one of her own. Hence I dedicate this recipe to her. My Chachi's Khatti Mithi Val Dal recipe
Ingredients
350 gms Val dal or Lima Beans - Washed and soaked for
3 hours
2 medium onions chopped
1 medium tomato chopped
1 tea spoon ginger garlic paste
2 green chillies finely chopped
1 tea spoon cumin powder
1 tea spoon coriander powder
2 tea spoons kashmiri chilli powder
1/2 tea spoon turmeric powder
3 table spoons desiccated coconut
1 table spoon Jaggery - 1 tea spoon salt
1 table spoon tamarind soaked in 1/4 cup warm water
4 table spoons coriander leaves chopped
4 to 5 table spoons oil
Method
Wash 350 gms Val dal and soak for 3 hours. Drain and keep aside
Place a deep pan on Medium high heat
Add 2 medium onions chopped and fry for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent
Add 1 tea spoon ginger garlic paste and fry for a minute until fragrant
Add 2 green chillies finely chopped and fry for a minute
Add 1 medium tomato chopped and stir and cook for 2 minutes
Add 1 tea spoon cumin powder, 1 tea spoon coriander powder, 2 tea spoons kashmiri chilli powder, 1/2 tea spoon turmeric powder, 1 tea spoon salt and cook all of this for 2 to 3 minutes
Add 3 table spoons desiccated coconut and stir everything well
Add to this 350 gms Val dal or Lima Beans - which we soaked for 3 hours and then drained
Stir everything and cook for 2 to 3 minutes coating the dal well in this masala
Add 2 cups water and 2 table spoons fresh chopped coriander leaves, stir everything and bring to a boil
Cover and cook for 10 minutes on medium heat
Open and give it a stir
Soak 1 table spoon tamarind in 1/2 cup warm water and add the paste as well as water to the dal through a strainer.
Add 1 table spoon chopped Jaggery to this and stir everything
Bring to a boil and cover and cook for 10 minutes on medium low heat.
Open and gently stir everything, the dal should have cooked by now
Check the dal by pressing it between your fingers, if it smashes easily then the dal is cooked
Garnish with 2 table spoon coriander leaves and serve hot with pav or roties
