Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh Ali Hujwiri (R.A.) – Biography and Legacy
Early Life & Lineage

Born around 400 AH / circa 1009 CE in the suburbs of Ghazni, Afghanistan—specifically Jullab and Hujwir—hence his name Hujwiri.

Descended from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through both Imam Hasan (paternal line) and Imam Husain (maternal line), making him both Hassani and Hussaini Sayyid.

Education & Spiritual Training

Memorized the Qur’an in his youth and studied Arabic, Farsi, Hadith, Fiqh, and philosophy in Ghazni, a major center of learning under Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi’s rule.

Embarked on travels across the Islamic world—visiting Syria, Iraq, Persia, Azerbaijan, and more—in search of spiritual knowledge and meeting Sufi masters.

Became a disciple of Hazrat Abul Fazal Muhammad bin Khatli of the Junaidi Sufi order in Syria.

Practiced ascetic rituals—such as extended meditation and fasting—under his teacher’s guidance.

Spiritual Miracles & Notable Incidents

Renowned for his humility, he once resolved a village’s milk shortage by blessing a cup of milk, resulting in miraculous abundance in cows.

According to tradition, he subdued a local mystic governor, Rā’ye Raju, through divine intervention. Raju accepted Islam thereafter and was renamed Shaykh Ahmad Hindi.

Presented a divine demonstration that affirmed the direction of the Ka’bah in his newly built mosque.

Literary Contributions

Authored Kashf al-Mahjub ("Revelation of the Veiled"), one of the earliest and most influential Persian works on Sufism.

The book explores Sufi terminology, states, and practices, and differentiates between mere scholarship (‘alim) and true spiritual knowledge (‘arif)—a distinction he emphasizes as vital.

Spiritual luminaries such as Khwāja Muʿīn al-Dīn Chishtī and Sheikh ‘Abd al-Qādir Jīlānī lauded him; Chishtī reportedly said there’s no better guide than a disciple’s own teacher, but Kashf al-Mahjub could serve as one in its absence.

Final Years & Shrine

Settled in Lahore, where he spent much of his later life preaching and teaching.

Passed away around 465 AH / 1072–1077 CE. There’s some variance in exact dates, but generally it's accepted to be in that range.

His shrine, Data Darbar, stands today in Old Lahore and is the largest Sufi shrine in South Asia. The complex continues growing from its origins beside his mosque in the 11th century.

Cultural & Spiritual Impact

His shrine draws up to one million devotees during the annual Urs festival, featuring qawwali, dhamaal dances, devotional chants, and a langar serving free meals.

Recognized as a seminal figure in spreading Islam across the Indian Subcontinent, he remains venerated as Lahore’s patron saint
