Описание: To learn about local variants of the Ékpè ‘leopard’ society the Cross River region, Miller trekked through the forest region near Cross River National Park. In Old Ekuri (Akamkpa LGA), the Ékpè elders received him in their Ékpè hall with an ukara cloth as a backdrop. An Ékpè mask blesses the stones and trees in front of the hall. The elders drink ofufop (‘illicit gin’), then sing together. As the percussion begins, the mask begins to dance Nsibidi codes with Ékpè leaves in its left hand. The mask moves around the center of the village followed by a procession. An attendant picks up leaves that fall from the branch held by the mask. The mask uses the branch of leaves to ‘bless’ small boys who are presented by villagers (who run away terrified). Returning to the hall, the elders perform Nsibidi before entering, then seated in the hall, they continue with songs.
