Indulgences are one of the most misunderstood teachings in the Catholic Church.
No, they’re not a way to “buy your way into Heaven.”
They’re a gift of God’s mercy, through the Church, to remit the temporal punishment due to sin.
🛑 They don’t forgive sin — that’s what Confession is for.
But indulgences help purify what sin has damaged, even after we’ve been forgiven.
✅ Partial indulgences remove part of the temporal punishment
✅ Plenary indulgences remove all of it
Conditions to receive an indulgence:
✔️ Be in a state of grace
✔️ Confession within 20 days
✔️ Receive Holy Communion
✔️ Pray for the Pope’s intentions
✔️ Perform the indulgenced act (e.g., Rosary, Scripture, Adoration)
You can even offer indulgences for souls in purgatory.
