Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at installing the Curt Trailer hitch receiver on a 2021 Cadillac XT6. Now this is what it's gonna look like when you have your trailer hitch receiver installed but not in use. And that's something that's really nice with a lot of the GM SUVs is they do have a cover that's gonna keep it all hidden and OEM looking until you're ready to get that hitch either loading up your accessories or towing. And it's very simple. You just have two T15 screws on the bottom that you'll remove. And once those are out, this panel will come out giving you access to your trailer hitch receiver.
A receiver is a 2-inch x 2-inch, which is gonna be a great option for a bunch of different accessories as that's kind of the standard size. So when choosing ball mounts, bike racks or cargo carriers, you're gonna have tons of options available. And all of the accessories are gonna stay in place with a 5/8s pinning clip. Now this is not included with the hitch, but many times when you pick up accessories they'll have them and it is gonna be a requirement to make sure they stay in place. If you plan on leaving your accessories in place long term, you might wanna look at a locking pin and clip.
That way you can lock that in place and no one can just walk away with those accessories. Now if you plan on pulling a trailer, your safety chain loops are a plate style. And they're a little bit further recessed. And that's mostly so you can get your panel put back in place. You can get a standard on there and even a larger clever style.
It's a little bit tucked back here, but you are still able to get this attached. And speaking of pulling a trailer, you are gonna want to adhere to the weight capacities on the hitch. So this one's actually fairly decent ratings, coming in with a gross trailer weight rating of 4,500 pounds. And that's gonna be the weight of the trailer plus whatever's loaded onto it. Your tongue weight rating's pretty solid here with 675 pounds.
And that's gonna be the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube opening. So any of your cargo carriers or bike racks are gonna play into that weight capacity. And honestly you can get a four bike bike rack loaded up and probably not have any issues with overloading that tongue weight. Now when choosing accessories, especially ones that stow in a vertical position like a bike rack or cargo carrier, you do wanna make sure that it's gonna work with this vehicle. And we do have test vehicles of videos available to show you how bike racks and cargo carriers interact with your vehicle so take a look at those. But when choosing from the center of our hitch pin hole to the furthest point, we're looking at six inches. And that's pretty serious. So I do worry that some of those accessories may not be able to fold up without making contact with the fascia. And also if you're choosing a ball mount, I would recommend one with a pretty long shank. And that way that ball's gonna be far enough out and you're not gonna be hitting your bumper while backing up to the trailer. So just something to kind of keep in mind. Now going along with choosing a ball mount, we also wanna check our clearance. So from the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground, we're coming in at 18 and a half inches. So pretty serious ground clearance. That's really gonna be a measurement to determine the riser drop necessary to tow a trailer. So what you can do is measure from the ground to the top of the coupler when the trailer's level and then compare that with our measurement and determine that riser drop necessary. I'd be willing to bet more than likely you're gonna be getting a drop. So look for something with a long shank with a little bit of a drop and just double check your trailer to make sure that it's gonna coincide. Now when it comes to towing a trailer, you do wanna check the vehicle's owner's manual to see what it's capable of towing. Compare that not only with the hitch, but all of the accessories you'll be using to hook up to the trailer. And take the lowest number, so you stay safe. Now I will recommend if you're gonna be doing the hitch, you might want to take a look at getting wiring at the same time because you're gonna need that for light functions on your trailer. And we have a 7-pull here. There wasn't a
