A diaphragm shutter, also known as an iris or leaf shutter, is a mechanism used in cameras to control the duration and intensity of light exposure to the film or sensor. It consists of a series of overlapping metal blades arranged in a circular formation, similar to the aperture blades in a lens.
When the shutter release button is pressed, the blades open up to allow light to pass through the lens and expose the film or sensor. The size of the opening, or aperture, can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or sensor, thus affecting the exposure. Once the desired exposure time has passed, the blades close again to end the exposure.
Diaphragm shutters offer several advantages, including precise control over exposure time and the ability to synchronize with a flash at high shutter speeds. They are commonly found in medium and large format cameras, as well as some high-end compact cameras. However, they are less common in modern interchangeable lens cameras, where focal-plane shutters are more prevalent.
