My first ever hillclimb at Prescott turned into something completely unexpected - and I had the most famous marshal in British motorsport watching every embarrassing second.
Taking a 1934 Austin 7 Special up one of Britain's most iconic hillclimbs was always going to be a challenge. Getting your MSA interclub licence, joining the VSCC, and preparing for your first motorsport event is nerve-wracking enough. What I didn't expect was Richard Hammond quietly marshalling my section whilst Discovery Plus filmed nearby. No pressure then.
This is the complete guide to getting into hillclimb racing for under £1000.
The Austin 7 might only have 20 horsepower and zero safety equipment, but it's the same type of car that taught legends like Bruce McLaren and Graham Hill their craft.
Whether you're considering getting your interclub licence, looking into vintage racing, or just curious about what hillclimbing actually involves, this video covers everything from entry costs to the reality of competing in pre-war machinery. Spoiler alert: I was absolutely terrible, but that's exactly why it was brilliant.
