An interview with Michael Bond for the Julian Bond Oral History Project, sponsored by the School of Public Affairs at American University. The project documents the professional rise of Julian Bond from his early years in the Atlanta student movement, his work as a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and his rise to national prominence by 1968. Conducted by Gregg Ivers, Professor of Government and Project Director, in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 11th, 2019.
Mr. Bond is the third of five children of Julian Bond. A native of Atlanta, Mr. Bond graduated from Frederick Douglass High School and attended Morehouse College and Georgia State University. In 1994, Mr. Bond was elected to the City Council and served in that position until 2001. In 2009, Mr. Bond was again elected to the City Council. At the time this interview was conducted in October 2019, he was still serving on the City Council. Mr. Bond has also been an active member of the Atlanta branch of the NAACP.
Here, Mr. Bond discusses what it was like to grow up in the Bond household, how his Dad influenced his personal interests, career choices and own vision of public service. Finally, Mr. Bond talks about his Dad's legacy as a civil rights activist, educator, public figure, and, above all, a father.
