Using USA Android phone, Nord OnePlus 30 5G! I never knew~~~~ FYI- You do need a Korean bank account tied to Kakao Pay. Sorry, iPhone users it is not an available option on the app as of this posting.
Prior to this, The only way to go through the subway was with a Korean debit card or credit card, a T-Money card (etc.), or a domestic Korean phone with the appropriate app. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could use a foreign Android phone and avoid not having to use the other three forms going through the subway. No more worries about having to lose a physical card or needing to buy a domestic Korean phone just to get through the subway 👏
You can setup the Kakao pay to be replenished when it dips below 10,000 won so no need to worry about checking your balance manually and transferring the appropriate funds from your Korean bank account.
