Releasing worms over your vermicompost bed is a simple process that can be done in a few easy steps:
Prepare your vermicompost bed: Make sure your vermicompost bed is properly prepared and has a good balance of organic material, moisture, and aeration. The ideal temperature range for the bed should be between 60-80°F (15-27°C).
Acquire worms: Purchase or collect red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) or another type of composting worm. You can typically find them at garden centers or order them online.
Choose a good release time: Choose a time to release the worms when the temperature is moderate and the vermicompost bed is not too dry or too wet.
Scatter the worms: Scatter the worms evenly over the vermicompost bed. You can simply dump them on top of the bed and then gently mix them in with a pitchfork or trowel. Make sure not to bury them too deeply, as they need to be able to move around freely.
Cover and wait: Cover the vermicompost bed with a layer of moistened bedding material such as shredded newspaper, straw, or leaves. This will help to keep the worms moist and protected. Wait a few days before adding any new food scraps to the bed to give the worms time to acclimate.
Remember to avoid overfeeding the worms and to maintain proper moisture levels in the vermicompost bed. With proper care, your worms will quickly get to work breaking down your food scraps and turning them into rich, nutrient-dense vermicompost.
