Did you know that mastic oil, also called 'tears of Chios,' has been harvested on the beautiful Greek island of Chios? Mastic resin starts as a sap, and when the sun works its magic, it dries into delicate, translucent droplets that resemble tears.

Records indicate the Greeks have harvested it for over 2500 years. It was first mentioned by Hippocrates, who used the resin to prevent digestive issues and colds, and also to freshen the breath.

During the Ottoman Empire, mastic was so valuable that the best crops were reserved exclusively for the sultan and his harem. They considered it a true treasure, and the punishment for stealing mastic resin was incredibly severe – it could cost you your life!

Pasteli is the ancient Greek dessert, that has very few ingredients, but it has a great deal of history behind it. The first thing we know about this iconic Greek sweet is that it dates back to the Homeric era. It was even mentioned in the Odyssey and in the Iliad. A dish made of honey and sesame, was used to give energy to Greek warriors who were battling in the Trojan War.

This custom later became a recognized ritual in Greek weddings. The honey symbolized love and passion whereas sesame recalled the seed of life, or fertility.

Incredibly, even to this day, the custom of eating pasteli as part of the wedding ritual remains, especially on the islands of the Aegean Sea.
