Sociologist Vikas Singh's research, as discussed in this clip, looks at who many of the Kanwariyas are and what the journey means to them. Many come from economically weaker backgrounds and work as construction workers, truck drivers and helpers.

The physical demands of the journey, from walking long distances to carrying heavy Kawads, can turn qualities like physical strength, discipline and endurance into visible achievements. For people who may have limited status or recognition in everyday life, the journey can become a space where they feel seen and valued.

For a few days, people who are often invisible in everyday society can become the centre of attention on the highway.

So perhaps the Kawad Yatra isn't only about faith. It can also be about identity, dignity, recognition and belonging.
