She is the mother of Michael and Anna Gray, aunt of Arthur, Thomas, John, Ada and Finn Shelby, as well as being the matriarch of the Shelby Family. She is part of the Birmingham criminal gang, the Peaky Blinders, a certified accountant and company treasurer of Shelby Company Limited.

When the Shelby brothers were absent during WWI, Polly managed the Peaky Blinders business. Since her nephews came back, she has been an important figure in the Shelby family dealing with family feuds and advising on the company's actions and policies.

Polly originates from the criminal Gypsy family the Shelbys. She's the daughter of Mr. Shelby and Birdie Boswell. Her brother is Arthur Shelby Sr. Polly tells her son Michael Gray that his grandmother was a Gypsy Princess. Polly always wears the Black Madonna.

When she was young and the police were after her father, he used to take the family out, living in the wood. When she was sixteen she got pregnant, however the father did not return and she was forced to abort the child on her own terms. She managed to do a self-administered abortion and almost died.

She later married a river Gypsy whose last name was Gray and had two children, Michael and Anna Gray. However, her husband died drunk, squeezed between a boat and a lock, and both her children were taken from her by the parish authorities, in part due to the intervention of a neighbor.

Aunt Polly has looked after her nephews, Arthur, Thomas, John, Finn, and her niece Ada since they were young. She managed the Peaky Blinders and its businesses while the Shelby boys were fighting in WWI.
