In this video I talk through what finally clicked for me in soapmaking after eight batches, focusing on base formulation, ingredient tradeoffs, and how small changes affect glide, lather, and post-shave feel. I get into why I keep certain ingredients like coconut oil low, how I’m balancing sodium and potassium hydroxide, and why the base does most of the heavy lifting. I also share some thoughts on natural slate whetstones, including my experience with Vermont slate and how it compares to other stones I’ve used. This is more of a conversational bench-talk video than a tutorial, just sharing what I’ve been learning along the way.
