Today we'll explore watercolors using a combination of WASHES and BLEEDS, with the artist John Marin (1870-1953) as inspiration for our painting.
John Marin was an American artist and is recognized as one of the best watercolor artists of the 20th Century. Marin is often called a “Modernist” artist, and his style was truly unique and expressive.
Marin painted “West Point, Maine” in 1914 on his first trip to this beloved state. Today’s painting is housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art (link below). Marin’s work can also be found in other major collections here in the US, and I encourage you to view more of this amazing artist’s work in some of the other online collections I’ve linked below.
Supplies needed for today’s lesson:
Watercolor paint and palette
Watercolor paper (taped to a sturdy board preferably)
Watercolor brushes (small and medium sizes)
2 cups of clean water
Paper towels & a sponge
A carefree attitude
My go-to supplies? Watercolor paints include Yarka and handmade paints by The Letter Sparrow. My brushes are Windsor & Newton and my paper is Canson XL 140 lb. coldpress.
