The character’s name was a tribute given to the Batman co-creator and DC writer Bill Finger. William is a person who is obsessed with the concept of death just as the kid who would get obsessed with video games. And later in course of events, he becomes the “Black Hand” the first Black Lantern and begins his wrath after taking the oath “ The Blackest Night falls from the skies, The darkness grows as all light dies, We crave your hearts and your demise, By my black hand — The dead shall rise! ".
