Team USA’s freestyle skiers have expressed conflicted feelings about representing the United States at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics amid rising political tensions at home. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Opening Ceremony, athletes including 2022 gold medallist Chris Lillis and first-time Olympian Hunter Hess condemned the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, which sparked protests and fatal shootings in Minneapolis last month.
Lillis emphasized that while he loves the U.S., he hopes to use the Games to project a positive image of the country, highlighting values such as respect and protection of citizens’ rights. Hess echoed similar sentiments, clarifying that wearing the Team USA uniform represents his friends, family, and what he believes is good about America—not every political action.
The controversy has followed Team USA to Italy, where ICE’s presence and Homeland Security operations have sparked local protests and forced U.S. officials to rename shared athlete spaces for hockey, figure skating, and speedskating. Despite the tense political climate, athletes hope their performances will reflect a better image of the U.S. on the world stage.
