Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure commonly used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). During TURP, a specialized instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra to remove excess prostate tissue that is obstructing urine flow. This approach avoids the need for external incisions.
Why TURP is performed:
To relieve symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, or incomplete bladder emptying.
To address complications like recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or kidney damage caused by blocked urine flow.
Recovery and risks:
Recovery typically involves a short hospital stay, and most men can resume normal activities within a few weeks.
Common side effects include temporary difficulty urinating, retrograde ejaculation (semen entering the bladder instead of exiting the penis), and, in rare cases, erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence.
