Breast Cyst: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.
What are breast cysts?
Breast Cysts are areas of fluid collection in the breast. They are a very common non-cancerous condition and one that doesn’t convert to cancer.
What causes breast cysts?
Breast cysts are believed to be caused by fluctuating hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. So they’re common in young women in their 30s and 40s and usually go away after menopause.
What are symptoms of breast cysts?
Breast cysts can cause a lump or pain.
So symptoms of cysts can overlap other more serious conditions in the breast- so if you have a lump- you need to undergo appropriate investigations to confirm if the lump you have is a cyst.
How to prevent breast cysts?
Women who have a tendency to form cysts are often frustrated that they can’t prevent them- and there’s no sure-shot receipt to stop them from occurring. Decreasing or stopping caffeine and alcohol consumption, maintaining normal Vitamin D levels can help.
How are breast cysts treated?
Most simple breast cysts that are found on ultrasound- do not need treatment. If a cyst is large , felt by hand and painful- then we remove the fluid with a needle- what we call cyst aspiration.
Sometimes if becomes necessary to confirm that a cyst is in fact a cyst- especially if ultrasound shows what may be a complicated or complex cyst. In such cases again we perform the needle aspiration under ultrasound guidance and if the cyst fluid appears bloody, the lump doesn’t completely collapse or disappear after removal of the fluid, then we test the fluid with cytology or perform a biopsy of the solid element or wall.
If a cyst which has been aspirated keeps filling up with fluid -we may try an OPD based procedure called sclerotherapy which is done under local anesthesia in the clinic. If that doesn’t work either, we may proceed with removal of the cyst lining surgically with a cosmetic hidden scar approach. However, most women who have cysts do not need to undergo surgery for them.
