The unique and very interesting Prasonisi Beach is located in the very south of Rhodes, about 92 km southwest of the capital city. The windswept beach with its wonderfully fine sand is described as a surfer's paradise.
The southern tip of Rhodes is made of the small island of Prasonisi, which is connected to the mainland by a strip of quicksand that runs in two directions as it touches the mainland coast. In total, the beautiful sandy beach of Prasonisi is about 3 km long.
At low tide and lower sea level, you can reach the islet of Prasonisi with a dry foot and Prasonisi Beach resembles the shape of the letter "Y". This is another gem of this place, because it is here where the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea meet and where you can switch from one to the other. However, if the sea level rises, which regularly happens at high tide or then generally in autumn, the sandy path to the islet is flooded with water.
Prasonisi Beach is spacious, covered with sand and its facilities are especially suited to surfers who seek this place out. The unique beach, strong wind and the wild sea waves are the ideal combination for surfers (especially in July and August, when the northern winds called "meltemi" blow). Most of them come with their own equipment, but there are also rental shops with all the necessary equipment for windsurfing, kitesurfing, etc., including courses with an instructor.
The area is less suitable for swimming as there because of the strong wind and big waves, but if you stick more to the shore you can swim quite easily. Families with children, swimmers and less experienced surfers mainly choose the eastern part of the beach (Mediterranean Sea), which is quieter. The Aegean Sea tends to be more choppy.
