​Jazmine Ulloa is a national reporter for The New York Times. She previously reported for The Boston Globe, where she was part of a team that won the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting, and the Los Angeles Times. A native of El Paso, she started out as a journalist in Texas, where she worked for newspapers in Brownsville, San Antonio, and Austin. She has made appearances on MSNBC, CNN, and CBS, as well as in Al Jazeera’s documentary television program Fault Lines.

​In EL PASO: Five Families and One Hundred Years of Blood, Migration, Race, and Memior, Ulloa delivers a sweeping, deeply human portrait of a city and its people at the crossroads of nations, cultures, and political divides. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting, Ulloa—who was born and raised in the city herself—weaves together the stories of five families whose lives illuminate the fault lines, and the resilience, of America today.

​Each family featured in EL PASO is emblematic of a critical turn in the history of the U.S.- Mexicoborder and its enforcement. Part One follows the Chew and Martinez families as they navigate changing physical and personal borders through the foundational period of the U.S. immigration system. Part Two features the Rubio sisters and the Holguin brothers—Mexicans soon to be Americans—as they grow up and rise as politicians and entrepreneurs during wars against drugs and terror that help expand that system into a detention and deportation machine. Part Three then captures the journey of Kaxh Mura’l, a Maya Ixil activist, who flees Guatemala as one hundred years of rights over race, labor, and immigration have escalated into an all- out assault on migrants and the fabric of the United States itself.
