York BID have teamed up with the York-based Yorkshire Film Archive (YFA) to bring the rich film heritage of the city to the big screen, especially for Yorkshire Day 2019. The team at the YFA have curated a special selection of short films from their vaults for you to watch on a giant screen in St Sampson’s Square, on August 1st, from 10am – 7pm, and it’s free.
The hour-long compilation of archive footage includes football at Bootham Crescent in the 1950s, the story of JORVIK in the 1980s and moving images of York’s chocolate and railway heritage. From rare shots of WW1 soldiers, the arrival of a new bell - “Great Peter” - to York Minster in 1927, to forgotten views of the city such as the open-air swimming pool in Rowntree Park and the River Ouse frozen in time, all will be revealed in this celebratory compilation.
