While the so-called discovery of Yucatan, the Mayan region par excellence, led by the conquistador Hernández de Córdoba, was taking place in 1517; on the other side of the ocean, Martin Luther exposed his 95 theses at the door of the church in Wittenberg, initiating the great fracture with the Catholic Church. But it was not the only event of relevance: The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Selim I, conquered Egypt, consolidating his dominion over the region and altering the geopolitical balance of the Mediterranean. A new chapter was being written in the history of the Middle East.
Three apparently disparate events, united by a whirlwind of changes that defined an era. Exploration, religious revolution and conquest, converging in the same year, as a reminder of the turbulent nature of history. On the one hand, Hernández de Córdoba maintained a first formal contact with the Mayans, on the other hand, Luther inaugurated the emergence of a new theology: the Protestant Reformation. And in the Mediterranean, the dispute between Muslims and Christians was intensified by the Ottoman consolidation, threatening the western territories.
1517, a year marked by Spanish audacity, religious rebellion and Ottoman expansion.
