Australia has added roughly two Canberras' worth of new people since Covid, which commentators say is putting a huge strain on rental markets in our capital cities.
The number of homes being built is still well below population growth, and Labor is forecasting another 1.8 million people over the next five years.
As the election draws nearer, opinion polls show a growing number of Australians favour lowering the immigration rate to addressing our housing crisis.
A recent Scanlon Foundation survey found around half of the respondents felt the numbers were too high, although most didn't name it as a high-priority issue for the country.
But many young Australians, including first-home buyers, say they're worried for their future.
So should Australia consider lowering its immigration rate until the affordability crisis is under control?
