STORYLINE:

French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot visited a Paris mosque on Wednesday to protest over the traditional slaughter of sheep during the Muslim celebration of Eid-el-Kebir.

Bardot, who is pushing for an anesthetic to be given to the sheep before slaughter, met the President of the French Council of Muslims, to discuss the issue.

After the meeting, Bardot said Dalil Boubakeur had agreed to the request.

She said: "Mr. Boubakeur has set an excellent example, excellent. In principal now the animals that will be sacrificed according to the Muslim ritual will not be conscious."

In 2000, a French court convicted Bardot of inciting "discrimination, hatred or racial violence" after she criticized the Muslim practice of slaughtering sheep in a book she had written.
