DIFFERENTIATION – BASIC CONCEPTS
1. Derivative Definition:
dy/dx = Lim (h → 0) [ f(x + h) – f(x) ] / h
2. Derivative of basic functions:
d/dx (x^n) = n * x^(n-1)
d/dx (c) = 0 (where c is constant)
d/dx (kx) = k (where k is constant)
3. Trigonometric Functions:
d/dx (sin x) = cos x
d/dx (cos x) = -sin x
d/dx (tan x) = sec^2 x
d/dx (cot x) = -csc^2 x
d/dx (sec x) = sec x * tan x
d/dx (csc x) = -csc x * cot x
4. Exponential & Logarithmic Functions:
d/dx (e^x) = e^x
d/dx (a^x) = a^x * ln(a)
d/dx (ln x) = 1/x
d/dx (log_a x) = 1 / (x * ln a)
5. Product Rule:
d/dx [u * v] = u * dv/dx + v * du/dx
6. Quotient Rule:
d/dx [u / v] = (v * du/dx – u * dv/dx) / v^2
7. Chain Rule:
d/dx [f(g(x))] = f’(g(x)) * g’(x)
8. Some Standard Results:
d/dx (√x) = 1 / (2√x)
d/dx (1/x) = -1/x^2
d/dx (x^x) = x^x (1 + ln x)
